He who is faithful in a few small things
Shall rule o'er many, so our Master said—
Bid many thoughts of fear and sin depart
And know the happiness a kind thought brings.
The little things it is that make or mar
The harmony with which we may surround
Ourselves and others: just a little thing
That, in a night of doubt, gleams like a star.
So small a thing—a smile, a word of cheer,
A helping hand stretched out in sympathy!
And thus as though we heard the stir of wings,
We know God's angel-thoughts are drawing near.
Dear messengers of Truth and Love, to me
Draw nigh, and let me learn and use your grace,
Humility which, listening for His voice,
Enables me my brother's need to see.
So shall my earnest, constant prayer be,
That Love will keep me, faithful, in the path
Which upward mounts, and let me hear at last
The "Well done"! of my Father, greeting me.
