THE Christian Science organization is presenting to the world the truth about Church and the functions of church. Its great Founder, Mary Baker Eddy, clearly saw the necessity of an organization to support and protect the teachings of Christian Science. This organization will be maintained as long as it is necessary to lead men to the truth. When we have reached the place where we do not manifest a belief in man as corporeally organized, then shall we have reached the place where we can do without church as humanly manifest. Loyal Christian Scientists must be awake to the indispensable value of their movement to the world and to themselves.
A very important department of our organization is the boards of directors of the branch churches, on which hundreds of Christian Scientists all over the world are serving. If any temptation to criticize its board ever assails a church it may be remembered that the board is the demonstration of the church itself, which when properly actuated endeavors to elect to that office the most Christianly metaphysical thinking eligible at the time for such service. It is to be remembered that a board can only obey and enforce the by-laws which the church itself has made.
The young board member sometimes assumes a big responsibility. Important as is its function, no board can do the work of the whole church, or by itself work out all church problems. Any tendency to assume all decisions and responsibilities, allowing the membership to remain in ignorance of its own affairs, is to be deplored, leading as it does to waning interest and mental laziness.
