LOYALTY TO TRUTH

From the June 1928 issue of The Christian Science Journal

EVERYBODY will readily admit that for anyone to be successful in the application of any science or any art he must be obedient to the rules or laws regulating the specific science or art. What would be thought, for instance, of a student of mathematics who tried to solve mathematical problems without having regard to the very definite rules determining every branch of the subject? One would be certain that such a so-called student must necessarily fail to solve the problems—and deservedly so, because of his disobedience, his lack of loyalty to what admittedly is the correct method.

It is not in the least different with the student of Christian Science. Christian Science teaches the absolute truth about God, and states the laws regulating the relationship between God and man, at the same time giving the rules whereby mankind may conform to these divine laws; and thus the Christian Scientist is equipped to solve the many and various problems of life. Every honest student knows how well Christian Science has provided for his needs in this respect; and he will readily admit, when he seems to fail in solving a problem, that it is not divine Science which is wrong, that it is not the rules of this Science which are at fault, but that either his understanding of Christian Science and its rules is lacking or he has failed to apply the rules properly.

Consider for a moment what Christian Science has done for us. It has enlightened us in a wonderful manner as to the nature of God and His creation. It has revealed God as infinite Spirit and His creation as spiritual, as consisting entirely of spiritual ideas. And since it has revealed the truth that Spirit is infinite and the real creation altogether spiritual, it has laid bare the fact that what mortals call matter is unreal. Thus, in all his reasoning the Christian Scientist is provided with a definite starting point, namely, the knowledge that infinite Spirit is real and so-called matter unreal.
