HOW important it is that we should have a proper concept of the purpose and mission of The Christian Science Monitor! What a revelation comes to the consciousness of one who is prayerfully desiring a better understanding of Mrs. Eddy's vision in establishing such a powerful channel for good! And when we have but touched the hem of this spiritual vision, how we reach forth for more light in regard to promoting this unique newspaper!
Mrs. Eddy undoubtedly saw that the press has a powerful influence over public thought and morals, and that a newspaper edited and published by loyal, consecrated students of Christian Science would counteract to a great degree the evil contagion of many daily newspapers. The Monitor is a vehicle through which good tidings are published and carried into homes and business houses, bringing with it cheer and inspiration. It uplifts the thoughts of those who read it, and strengthens their faith in truth and goodness and purity.
Although the Monitor has come to bless the whole earth, it is not a religious paper in the ordinary sense of the word. Therefore it is often received into homes and business houses where the other Christian Science literature may not at first be welcome. The Monitor, going daily over the world, lovingly and courageously admonishing all to think only on those things which are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report, is breaking down prejudice against Christian Science. Mrs. Eddy did not lightly name our newspaper The Christian Science Monitor.
