Throughout the Bible we find many references to the land of promise, which God covenanted to give to those obedient to His commands. This promised land is the heritage of God's children, the place of "peaceable habitation" mentioned by Isaiah. The teachings of Christian Science make plain the truth about the promised land, where all spiritual good is ever available; they point the way thereto, and show how to overcome all seeming obstacles in the way.
Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." Only, therefore, by following the Christ-example in thought, word, and deed can one hope to reach the promised land. The way is straight and narrow; and those who walk therein progress in the degree that thought is held to the allness of God and the nothingness of the claim that there is life and intelligence in matter. Our promised land is, thus, not a limited place, but the kingdom of God, which Jesus said is within us; and it is to be found not in the "Lo here! or, lo there!" of worldly riches, gain, fame, or pleasure, but in the realm of Spirit.
God sent Moses, after spiritual preparation for the work, to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt into Canaan, the land which had been promised them. It was because of Moses' close communion with God and his understanding of Him that the children of Israel were able to pass safely through the Red Sea, regardless of the seeming might of error. We who, in Christian Science, are to-day gladly journeying along the way from sense to Soul, were formerly, perhaps, in a state of bondage to beliefs of sickness, sin, lack, or discord. God spiritually prepared a Leader in this age, Mary Baker Eddy; and His revelations, as set forth in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and the other writings of Mrs. Eddy, are to-day leading thousands joyfully out of bondage to materiality into spiritual dominion and freedom.
