In the fortieth psalm we read: "He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God."
Nine months before I came to Christian Science I underwent an operation for what was described as an internal displacement. Three months after this I experienced what was called a complete nervous breakdown; and this was followed about two months later by a serious relapse. I wish to express gratitude for much kindness received from doctors and nurses. They were very good to me, but they could not lift me out of weakness, wretchedness, and fear. I had massage, electrical treatment, tonic injections, change of scene, and special diet; but I did not regain health.
As I look back across the years, I see now that I was resisting the truth, and needless to say I went through the "horrible pit" and the "miry clay" during the experience. Christian Science had been offered to me about a month after I passed through the operation, but I was very much prejudiced against it. Later my doctor spoke of Christian Science to me, but again I rejected it. At last, after nine months, when I seemed to be sinking into a chronic state of ill health, I turned to Christian Science and consented to have treatment.
