Testimonies of Healing

At the age of twelve I was attracted...

From the October 1930 issue of The Christian Science Journal

At the age of twelve I was attracted to Christian Science by the healing of my grandmother, and as a result attended the Christian Science Sunday School. Later, however, I drifted away from it and, through a blind faith in what I thought Christian Science to be, tried to combine with it will-power and psychology. I turned to material remedies when I became afflicted with facial paralysis. The local doctors could do nothing for me, and I had made arrangements to go to a specialist in a near-by city, when once again came the longing for divine help, and having a few minutes left before it was time to go to the train I went to say good-by to a friend who was a student of Christian Science. I told her I did not want to go away and wished there was something else I could do. She lovingly suggested that I should try Christian Science before I went to the specialist. I loved her and knew Christian Science had helped her very much, so I decided that I could at least see if it would help me.

I canceled all reservations and appointments for medical treatment, and sought help from a Christian Science practitioner. The affliction was overcome completely within three days. Instead of being grateful I accepted the suggestion that the difficulty had been only a temporary one. At this time I was the mother of a big healthy boy, but at his birth I had suffered intensely, and the doctor advised against my giving birth to another child. However, after the previously mentioned healing, I felt that with the help of Christian Science I could do so without the repetition of the first experience; but as conditions developed the situation became even more alarming and I again turned to physicians. The doctor had given me a course of serum treatments, with the result that my body became completely helpless, and I could not even swallow. A specialist was called and with the aid of two of the best doctors we knew, we felt that everything possible in a material way was being done. The doctor in charge told my husband they knew of nothing more to do.

A dear friend then said to my husband: "You have given the doctors a fair chance, and now they say they can do no more. Why not try Christian Science before giving up?" My husband then called a Christian Science practitioner, who lovingly came to me at once. I have been told that I had known no one for weeks, but that I knew when she came in, and spoke her name. She had been my teacher when I attended the Christian Science Sunday School. All were astonished except the practitioner. Relatives who were with me were expecting me to pass on at any time, but instead I was recognizing God's messengers; and through the good work of the practitioner and God's gracious love I was healed.
