TRUE GIVING

From the October 1930 issue of The Christian Science Journal

WHEN the Apostle Paul quoted Christ Jesus as saying, "It is more blessed to give than to receive," he emphasized a truth which has been widely proclaimed, but, it may be said, not so widely understood. Just how more blessedness is involved in giving than in receiving has been not only obscure but perplexing to a vast number of people, who, in many instances, have been tempted to question the accuracy of the Master's assertion.

Christ Jesus, as the great Teacher and Way-shower, was the most scientific man the world has known, because in his daily occupation he produced undeniable proof of what he knew and taught. To him words, however significant, were never wholly sufficient: they must be accompanied by practical deeds. This shows that when correctly interpreted the Master's declarations embrace facts which, when put into actual operation, can be exactly or scientifically verified to-day, even as they were in Bible times. What is the underlying basis of this verification, this proof? Simply a true or right understanding of God, the divine Principle of all that really exists —all creation, all activity, all law.

That we may clearly comprehend Jesus' famous declaration, let us consider the word "give," which is the key word of the statement. In the light of the Master's exalted understanding and practice, we see that, to be genuine, giving must reflect divine Principle, which is God, the Father, who as James tells us is the Giver of "every good gift and every perfect gift."
