"THE CERTAINTY OF SCIENCE"

From the October 1930 issue of The Christian Science Journal

HOW many times our Leader warns us against voicing error! In "Miscellaneous Writings" (pp. 220, 221) she makes this point very clear, showing its effects on the individual, and also showing how to reverse this effect, where she says, "If with the certainty of Science he knows that an error of belief has not the power of Truth, and cannot, does not, produce the slightest effect, it has no power over him." How plainly this reveals that the only power error can ever seem to have is the measure of our belief in it! The lame, the blind, the sick, the sensual, are slaves to their own false beliefs, slaves to the belief of sensation and pleasure in matter. We see this everywhere; and have we not ourselves been in bondage to false beliefs? But, oh, the joy of knowing that these false beliefs are powerless! With the unfailing "certainty of Science" we can know that, as we see their nothingness in the light of God's truth, they cannot produce the slightest effect.

One who had fallen under a medical verdict of a so-called incurable disease, on reading the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, for the first time saw this verdict as false, saw that it was merely a diagnosis of matter, a lack of understanding of the real, spiritual man. She saw an open door to freedom, a path lighted with God's truth. She entered this path, stepping out of the prison of condemnation to sickness and death into the way that leads to freedom and eternal life. It is true she did not yet know how to prove this freedom; but as she began immediately to learn more of the truth, man's inheritance of health, harmony, and happiness commenced to unfold to her, and she gradually lost the burden of fear. It was proved to her that "the inward man is renewed day by day." She daily rejoiced because she was beginning to see that the real man, the spiritual idea of divine Mind, is the only man. With this renewed courage, strength, and understanding of God, Mind, as the only Life, power, and activity, the healing was accomplished, and greater joy experienced in the clearer vision of Truth that meets not only physical needs but all conditions of inharmony.

"The certainty of Science" is the law of God's allness correctly understood and applied. It cannot fail. In Proverbs we read, "Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge, that I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth?" We can then rejoice, not in having so much to meet, but in having so much with which to meet inharmony. The unfailing law of God is ever operating, but if we are to benefit by it we must let Truth, God's law, operate in our individual consciousness. This will cleanse impurity, destroy false belief, give strength for weakness, courage for doubt, love in place of fear. It will replace the false material concept of man with the perfect spiritual idea of divine Mind.
