We read in the Scriptures, "What shall I render unto the Lord for all his benefits toward me?" While I never can pay the debt of love and gratitude I owe to God, I can at least express a little of my gratitude for all the benefits I have received since coming into Christian Science.
When our boy was eleven years old, one of Boston's best physicians diagnosed his case as diabetes and put him on a strict diet. After about a year and a half the doctor told him he had done all he could do for him, but that by being careful of his diet he might live for years; while, on the other hand, being careless of his food would cause his death. The boy became discouraged and despondent.
About this time a friend asked me why I did not try Christian Science for him. I remember feeling quite sure that it would not cure him; but I was willing to try it, hoping that it would help to uplift his thought, which was very low. Never shall I forget that first visit to a Christian Science practitioner. When told of his meager diet she said, "What bondage!" She then told us something about God and His love. Although I had been brought up in a Christian home, and had been an active church member practically all my life, I found I never really knew God or how to trust in Him and have faith. The practitioner told the boy to eat what he wanted and have no fear that it would hurt him. From that hour he began to improve. He accepted all the practitioner said without question, and with the sweet, trustful faith of a child; and on our way home he said, "Mother, I know I am healed."
