Having been taught in the Sunday school of a so-called orthodox church, with which I had united when a child, I loved the Bible and desired to live a Christian life. In this Sunday school I asked my teacher, who was a consecrated Christian, why we did not have spiritual healing as with Jesus and his apostles. I received the unsatisfactory reply that spiritual healing was possible only in the apostolic age. Later, I often wished that more would be taught and preached of love as "the fulfilling of the law."
When, at the request of a loved one, I began to read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I rejoiced to find that Christian Science teaches and that its students practice spiritual healing, and also (p. 113) that "the vital part, the heart and soul of Christian Science, is Love." Truly I can now say with the Psalmist, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." The doubt, anxiety, and fear that formerly attended dependence on materia medica have given way to confidence, trust, and gratitude as I prayerfully turn to God as our only physician.
Our three children have had many healings, of fever, colds, cuts, and other minor ailments; and they have been wonderfully protected in times of so-called contagious diseases. When our youngest boy was four years old, he was quickly healed of what a friend who had had experience with a similar case called "mastoiditis." This had assumed such an alarming form that I feared to go to sleep as it looked as though the child might pass on during the night. The work of the practitioner helped me to realize God's loving presence and care, and I slept through the night, as did the child. The next morning he was up playing. The following evening the swelling began to disappear, and complete healing soon followed.
