I did not come to Christian Science for physical healing; nevertheless, I needed the healing touch which only Christian Science gives, and after taking up the study in earnest I found I was more harmonious in every way.
My heart is filled with gratitude to God and also to Mrs. Eddy for our Reading Rooms. Whenever I pass through a street where one is located, my thought turns to an early experience, which I wish to relate, trusting it may help someone else. A member of the family was ill and we were looking for help. In James we read: "Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. ... Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: and the prayer of faith shall save the sick. . . . The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." I had read this many times and believed it to be true; so I naturally turned to the pastor of the church which I was then attending. I had called on a physician, but he gave no hope. The pastor turned my thought to his doctor. Then it flashed across me that I had read an inscription over a door many times on my way to work, "Christian Science Reading Room;" so I turned thither, and on finding the place I interviewed the librarian. When I had related my story she spoke just six words: "You are in the right place." She passed me a copy of The Christian Science Journal, opened it at a list of practitioners, and said, "Any one of these can help you." I telephoned to one, and the answer came back with hope and cheer, "I will help you." She came that evening and worked for some time, but did not need to come again.
I glimpsed the light and began my journey in Christian Science. For upward of nineteen years it has been my only physician. I have been healed of the liquor and tobacco habits of many years' standing. During this time, as a Christian Science nurse, I have seen all manner of disease healed and reformation in character take place. I am very grateful for the many provisions made by our Leader, whereby we may obtain a better understanding of the truth. My wife and I are both thankful for class instruction by a loyal teacher and also for membership in The Mother Church. Class instruction has been a great help on the journey.—Oakland, Maine.
