HEALING

From the March 1930 issue of The Christian Science Journal

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE is awakening mortals from a dream-sense of existence to demonstrable understanding of real selfhood in God, and restoring man's heritage of dominion as promised in the Scriptures. Knowledge of the healing truth through which we may speak "with authority" to all error, is acquired by change of mental perspective, from the viewing of man and the universe as material to the realization that there is but one creator and one creation—God and His reflection or likeness. We know that God is Spirit, not matter, and this true understanding changes our standpoint and centers thought upon the real and enduring. Error has suggested that we live in a mortal body and are controlled by it; and we have listened and believed. Yet all the belief of the ages never has made and never can make a falsehood true; but we must know the genuine before we can detect the counterfeit and expose its nothingness.

To Truth all is true, admitting not even a belief in the reality of the untrue. Our true selfhood is not in matter, but in God, divine Mind: it has the ability to know the real, to be and to do as God wills. Our present consciousness claims to constitute our present status, and the body is but the manifestation of the character and quality of our thoughts. The healing required is for Christ, Truth, to cleanse our consciousness of all that is unlike God, so that we may reflect the Life divine. If we are to progress toward reality, we must exchange belief for understanding, and plant ourselves upon a spiritual, instead of a material basis. The errors of mortal sense—sin, sickness, and all discord—are only beliefs that God and His attributes of harmony, health, and goodness are absent.

Our distrust of the power of Spirit to heal and sustain us proceeds from belief that substance and mind are in and of matter, a condition which is the exact opposite of the truth. God created all like Himself, Spirit, divine Mind, and saw that it was "very good," as the Scriptures declare. Where were matter, imperfection, error in this perfect creation God made to reflect His all-good and unchangeable nature? Nowhere; and we can prove this through the truth revealed in Christian Science. Jesus' power over evil knew no bounds, for he reflected God, Life; and he said we could do the works which he did. This task may well seem impossible of accomplishment by mortals, separated from God and unsustained by reality. But thought governed by God and knowing no other power may rise to heights of dominion undreamed of while still fettered by certain false mortal beliefs.
