In 1912, a friend from New York presented Christian Science to us. For two years, never a day had passed that I had not spent a portion of it on bended knees, pleading to God on behalf of my husband. I saw him gradually fading away, and the anguish was great.
We began reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and in two weeks my husband was eating and sleeping like a child. I myself was healed of a difficulty that a physician had said only an operation could relieve. As we had Science and Health and some of Mrs. Eddy's other books, we spent all the time we could studying these works and had proof after proof that Christian Science reveals the Christ, Truth.
One of the first of my experiences was learning the value of the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy. For some time error seemed to be striking at us from all sides. I prayed for guidance and to be shown wherein I was erring. One day, while trying to realize the nothingness of error, I turned to one of the Concordances to our Leader's works. On opening it, my glance rested on a reference that seemed to stand out from the others. I saw that it was a reference from the Church Manual. I turned to the Manual and found by reading this reference that I had been unconsciously disobeying one of its rules for several weeks. I cannot describe the peace that came over me, for I saw that I must watch and be obedient to the Manual, since it has its part in helping one to realize the spiritual status of man.
