After studying Christian Science for about four years I became careless and neglected my study for some time. Then, about three years ago, I was taken with a severe case of pleurisy of the lungs, tonsillitis in a bad form, earache, and constipation. Being much discouraged, I consulted a doctor. Many material remedies were prescribed, but I received no help. This went on for another week, and I was not able to get out of bed or dress myself.
My wife called a doctor and asked if there was not something he could do to help me. He replied that I would have to go to a hospital, and that it would take at least three months to heal me. This caused great fear, as being out of work for three months and not able to keep up my household expenses, besides the added expense of hospital and doctor's bills, would mean nothing short of financial shipwreck for me.
That same night a friend, a student of Christian Science, came to see me. He wanted to know why I was having medical treatment after studying Christian Science. I could not reply; but his question aroused me sufficiently to refuse the medicine that night, to turn to the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and cling to "the scientific statement of being" on page 468, with the result that the next morning I was able to go to a Christian Science practitioner for help. I had never met a practitioner before, and that first treatment was wonderful. In one week I was able to return to my work. I had absent treatment for the next week, at the end of which I was wonderfully and completely healed of these diseases. I also found that the tobacco habit, in which I had indulged for twelve years, had disappeared, along with many bad traits of disposition. I am grateful that I have been able to give this testimony in a Wednesday evening meeting.— Los, Angeles, California.
