TO GIVE SIGHT TO THE BLIND

From the April 1930 issue of The Christian Science Journal

We have been blind, O Lord,
Though we have walked abroad;
The veil of mortal sense hid from our eyes
All that we might have seen,
All that was good and fair.
For us no sun of righteousness could rise,
Nor might celestial glory fill the skies;
For mortal sight sees not, is ever blind,
Unconscious of the all-creative Mind,
Unconscious of Thy universe,
Men, blinded by disease and sin's dread curse.

But there was one who had the seeing eye,
Felt God as ever nigh,
Knew Him as Mind, as Life, and Truth, and Love;
As centuries ago Christ Jesus knew
And showed to men. She brought to me and you
Knowledge of man's birthright,
And led us out of darkness into light.
She saw what mortal sight has never seen,
Beheld the glory which has always been.
She brought the touch of Christ, the healing hand,
Fulfilled the truth of the divine command,
"Let there be light." Light came, came as of yore
To him born blind. We wake to know once more
The glory of Thy grace, the truth of Life.

How great, how wonderful a thing,
That all may see the King
In holiness and beauty! All may know
The sureness of man's oneness with his God,
The comfort of His grace, His guiding rod,
The riches of His love. The blind shall see,
And in the light of wisdom's purity
Shall stand and know on Truth's eternal shore
There is no night; for darkness is no more.
