About three years ago I pictured myself as a man censured by God. For many months I had been gradually failing in health, and in June, 1928, I was obliged to stop work. I went to my physician, and after an examination he stated that I had lead poisoning and ordered me to bed at once. For the next month I was able to get out of bed only a few minutes at a time, and then could hardly get around the room; and I soon discovered I was gradually getting worse. Very often I could scarcely walk. Through a friend I was persuaded to try another physician, and upon the latter's advice I was sent to a hospital for examination. After I had been three days in the hospital the doctor there told me to go home, but declined to give me information in reference to my ailment. However, before I left, his assistant, because of my desire to learn more about my condition, told me that I had tumor of the brain and that my chance for recovery was very slim. I next tried chiropractic, but as this also failed I went back to physicians again, and upon their advice I began getting my business affairs in shape for the end, which seemed fast approaching. My insurance company had sent their representative to make out a claim for permanent disability, as their company physician had reported I was totally and permanently disabled.
In the meantime Christian Science had been suggested by some dear friends, but I had given it very little thought. Later, my wife noticed an advertisement of a free lecture on Christian Science to be delivered on November 13. She suggested that we attend the lecture and I agreed. We went to the lecture, and I listened to the wonderful discourse and wished at the close that it might have continued for hours more. On the day following the lecture, my wife asked me if I had as much pain as usual. I had not noticed it, but when she asked I remembered I had experienced very little pain all day. This was very unusual, as I had been having severe pain for months. The thought came to me, Could I have got relief at the lecture? The following week passed, and I became so convinced that I had received help from attending the lecture that I decided to learn more about Christian Science. I telephoned to a practitioner for an appointment and was seated in his office about eleven-thirty in the forenoon. About two hours later he dismissed me, advising me to go to the Christian Science Reading Room and purchase "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. This I did, and then went to my place of business and did office work until the evening closing hour. The following day I hung up my walking sticks, and in the evening walked twelve blocks to the Christian Science Wednesday evening testimony meeting. Two days before I could not walk half a block without fatigue.
From the day I purchased Science and Health I continued reading and found that the light was coming to me. I saw an all-loving God at hand, ready to help me. One evening while reading I paused, closed the book and closed my eyes, and in silent prayer I asked God to heal me. Immediately something in my right side loosened and disappeared into nothingness. I knew then that my prayer had been heard and answered. I continued to read and thank God, all at the same time. With the pain in my head and the terrible torture in my side both gone I now realized that God had healed me; and this healing of a supposedly incurable ailment came about in less than two weeks. In December I again went to work, assuming the same duties as before my sickness.
