WILLINGNESS TO PROGRESS

From the January 1931 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science is the Science of infinite Mind, and as we understand it we are being linked to irresistible power. "Progress is the law of infinity," Mrs. Eddy says (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 15); and in saying this she states not a theory but an indisputable spiritual fact. All mortals would at times prefer to rest at the point of present attainment; but this is not possible. We cannot get away from the fact that under "the law of infinity" we must progress.

Mrs. Eddy tells us on page 224 of our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," that "there should be painless progress, attended by life and peace instead of discord and death." Why is it, then, that much of our experience seems to be fraught with suffering? If Christian Science were responsible for this, its Discoverer and Founder would not have held out the possibility of progress without pain.

Christian Science, the law of divine Love, must act as Love acts, must operate harmoniously, and therefore can never make one suffer. Suffering, then, must come from something else; and, indeed, it is resistance to Christian Science, resistance to God's law, resistance based on a mistaken or false sense of good, that occasions suffering. Moreover, the resistance is imposed on us by unreal mortal mind, resistance to the truth which can awaken us to, and thereby free us from, this so-called mind's tyranny. It is resistance to the divine facts which show us, and by which we can individually prove, the immeasurable scope of spiritual man's dominion. In other words, suffering comes from material opposition to the divine ideas of God, which, if they are permitted to unfold in our consciousness, thereby spiritualizing our thinking, will bring with them an abundance of joy, of fearlessness, of good.
