PRACTICALITY OF THE HOLY GHOST

From the January 1931 issue of The Christian Science Journal

TO those whose concept of religion is that of some impractical ideal, pigeonholed apart from daily activities, the Holy Ghost would seem too visionary to be of any use in the exigencies of modern life. Urged along by the fast-moving events of each day, they might reply to the question as to whether they had received the Holy Ghost in much the same vein as did the disciples who replied to Paul, "We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost." Yet, it is recorded in the Bible that the early Christians, exposed as they were to danger and persecution, found through the Holy Ghost wisdom, guidance, protection, counsel, peace, endurance, joy. We, to-day, are in hourly need of all these things, and materiality cannot supply them.

To those who carry on their duties honorably and to the best of their ability, yet find themselves handicapped in health, character, or general efficiency, Christian Science offers a healing message.

On page 588 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy has defined the "Holy Ghost" as "Divine Science; the development of eternal Life, Truth, and Love." Who will deny that humanity needs to understand this "development of eternal Life, Truth, and Love" in order that it may overcome sin, disease, and death? In the hour of sickness, which is so often allied to the fear of death, the Holy Ghost or divine Science restores to one health on a spiritual basis, and by spiritual means only.
