Testimonies of Healing

For over eighteen years Christian Science...

From the February 1931 issue of The Christian Science Journal

For over eighteen years Christian Science has been overcoming inharmony in my life. It has raised me from hopeless suffering and despair to health and happiness; and for this, words fail to express my gratitude. In June, 1912, physicians told my husband I could not live a week. I had gone through a serious operation for tumors two years previously, but had rapidly grown worse, with complications of heart trouble, creeping paralysis, anæmia, low blood pressure, nervous prostration, gallstones, kidney trouble, neuritis, chronic headache, and many other ailments. In fact, the physicians said there was scarcely an organ in my body which functioned normally.

I heard their verdict and, filled with a great fear of death, prayed earnestly to be shown a way of deliverance. My prayer was answered. A friend who knew of my condition asked me to try Christian Science, and as a last resort I consented to do so. A practitioner was called, and with the first treatment I left my bed, to which I had been confined for many weeks. The heart trouble was healed in two weeks, the kidney trouble immediately, as were some of the other conditions. The anæmia and the nervous condition took longer, but this afforded opportunity for deeper study, and eventually they too were overcome. To-day I consider myself a well woman. In recent years I passed two physical examinations for life insurance and was pronounced in excellent condition.

Every member of my immediate family has had healings through Christian Science. In the case of one of my children the evidence of almost death itself was set aside after everyone but I had given up hope. During an epidemic of diphtheria our younger son, three years old, came down with all the symptoms of this disease and was very ill. I immediately called a practitioner, feeling assured that all would be well. In compliance with the law, it was necessary to call a physician, who was kind and considerate and tried to do everything possible. The child constantly begged me to "read the book," which I did. He refused to swallow the medicine, whenever possible removing it after it had been administered. At the end of four anxious days he seemed so much improved that my husband and I were induced to rest, as we were exhausted after our long vigil. We were soon aroused by the nurse, however, who said that the child had passed on. At the sight of him my husband, who was not a student of Christian Science, became frantic, but I was so sustained that I was able to declare aloud that God was greater than that condition, and that we would leave it with Him. I called the practitioner, who lived in a distant city, and was told not to fear, because man could express only Life. I returned to my son, took him in my arms, and watched him return to consciousness. In less than two hours he sat up in his crib and asked for his toys—healed. The physician, who had been called, stood by me and saw this wonderful healing, though he himself did nothing. The next day he told friends that he had seen a miracle early that morning. I was indeed grateful for his recognition of Truth as the healing agency, for he had previously said the case was hopeless.
