I am very happy to vouch for my wife's testimony of her healings in Christian Science. I should also like to express my gratitude for the many healings that I have had through the study and application of this Science.
I did not come into Christian Science for physical healing. I was brought up in an orthodox church, but the religion that I was taught never satisfied me; in fact, it taught me nothing of God. After my wife's healing I began to attend the Christian Science services and to study the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
A number of my healings were instantaneous, some through applying the little understanding that I have of this truth, and others through the loving help of practitioners. My first healing was that of mastoiditis: the healing was instantaneous. I awoke one morning about three o'clock with a terrible pain in my ear. As the practitioner did not have a residence telephone listed, and his office hours did not commence until nine o'clock, I walked the floor for six hours. When I arrived at his office, he opened the Bible to the Psalms and told me to read the verses which he selected; and while I read, he gave me a treatment. The pain immediately stopped, and the mastoiditis entirely disappeared. This healing took place about nine years ago.
Another healing was that of yellow jaundice, with severe sore throat and very high fever. My wife and I were at Niagara Falls at the time, playing in vaudeville. On this particular morning we had been over to see the falls. On our return I became so ill I could scarcely reach the hotel. I went to our room alone, closed the door, took the Christian Science textbook, and read for about five minutes. Then I declared the truth for a few moments and fell asleep. When I awoke I found that I had slept only five minutes, and that I was completely healed. I went out and told my wife of my healing and ate a hearty dinner. That healing took place about seven years ago.
I should also like to tell of my healing of the smoking habit. I had smoked for many years, and had become so addicted to the use of cigarettes that I would have to get up in the middle of the night to smoke. At this time, while in a hotel in the northern part of Wisconsin, I was thinking of the many healings I had experienced in Christian Science. The thought came to me, Why do I not stop smoking? I had heard a great many people say they could stop when they wanted to, but did not because they saw no wrong in it. I used to say the same thing until I tried to stop and found I could not. I had gone far enough to make a god of it. But on this day, while I was thinking of this, the words of Mrs. Eddy came to me, as given in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 210), "Beloved Christian Scientists, keep your minds so filled with Truth and Love, that sin, disease, and death cannot enter them." So I said: "I am going to think only of good, just for today. Yesterday has passed, to-morrow never arrives, we live only in the present; so I will think of good just for to-day." I immediately began to apply that. Later on I went out on the street, and I had walked about two blocks when I passed a man who was smoking, and the smell of the smoke was almost nauseating. I knew then that I was healed of smoking. That healing took place nearly seven years ago, and the desire for smoking has never returned. I have been healed of many other physical ailments.
I am also very grateful that Christian Science is teaching me to love my neighbor as myself. I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, and for the Christian Science literature. My wife and I are both deeply grateful for class instruction.— New York, New York.
