The healing of a tumor on the...

From the March 1931 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The healing of a tumor on the wrist through the leavening effect of the truth in my consciousness is gratefully acknowledged. When the tumor first manifested itself I tried not to notice it; but mortal mind speculated about its origin, name, and nature, and it became more real to my thought. I experienced no pain, and it occurred to me that with my understanding of Christian Science I should be able to work out this problem. I tried fearlessly for several months, but without avail; in fact, a dear one in my family who is not interested in Christian Science said to me, "That thing on your hand is growing larger all the time."

At about this juncture our Bible Lesson recorded the healing of the man with the withered hand. As I meditated on the command of Jesus, "Stretch forth thine hand," I felt intuitively that here was my help. At first I applied a literal interpretation, but no mental or physical benefit was noted. Then I recalled what our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, says about material concepts in the Bible. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 241) she writes, "Take away the spiritual signification of Scripture, and that compilation can do no more for mortals than can moonbeams to melt a river of ice." Then I applied what I understood to be the spiritual meaning of "Stretch forth thine hand," and a multitude of applications in my daily routine suggested themselves. From that moment I knew that I held the key to the solution of this condition; and each day I tried more and more to express generosity, sympathy, and love. I tried to examine my thought and clear it constantly of evil. As my attitude and outlook changed, I became more uplifted; and, much to my delight, during a church service the tumor vanished.

My gratitude is boundless for God's love to His children, for the Master's proof of divine sonship, for the unity of all spiritual ideas as revealed in Christian Science. It was a privilege and a joy to take class instruction from a teacher whose loyalty to Mary Baker Eddy is inspiring, and to understand the eternal truth more clearly.—
