Testimonies of Healing

Before Christian Science was introduced...

From the December 1932 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Before Christian Science was introduced to me I used to think of business merely as one way of obtaining enough money and material goods to supply one's needs, and I should like to tell how the study of Christian Science has changed this outlook entirely. I was engaged in a small business when this so-called depression came knocking at the door. Men and women on whom I depended for my living were thrown out of employment, and gradually my income began to drop and all my efforts to increase trade were of no avail.

So I thought it time to find where the trouble lay. On examining my thoughts I found I had been entertaining a wrong thought of business. I had been seeing a material man, engaged in a material business, seeking satisfaction in material goods. I asked myself, What is man's real business? I found the answer in the first chapter of Genesis: "God created man in his own image." And so I found that man's real business was to image forth, reflect, or express God. Now, I asked myself, how can I reflect God? We learn in Christian Science that God is Spirit, Truth, Love, Principle, and so I learned that it is man's business to be spiritual in thought and deed; to be truthful and honest; to be loving and lovable; to be governed by Principle in all his ways. From this I learned that it is not man's business to generate supply, but to reflect God, good. The next day a gentleman walked into my shop and said he had a proposition to put to me. He had noticed that I had some vacant space in my shop, and if I would let him rent it, together with one of my windows, he would be very grateful. Truly, "the Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want."

We have had many beautiful healings in our home, sometimes with the help of practitioners, and sometimes with the understanding we have gained through the study of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The desire for tobacco left me instantaneously nearly six years ago, while I was listening to a lecture on Christian Science, and never once have I had the desire to smoke since.
