SPIRITUAL MEDITATION

From the December 1932 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The mainspring of highest accomplishment lies concealed in the depths of sacred meditation, the purity of spiritual intuition, the strength of inspired conviction. The teaching of Christian Science is both ideal and practical, appealing not only to those who are naturally religious-minded, but also to individuals who have hitherto sought in vain for a demonstrable doctrine, a logical code of living, a basis for enduring satisfaction. It lifts the gray veil of pessimism enshrouding human thought and brings to it the light, comfort, and freedom of divine Truth. Christian Science silences the shrill clamor of self-will and the mental agony of fear, and awakens that spiritual sense whereby one may make practical use of the ideas of God, divine Mind.

Because of the routine of daily duties demanding time and attention, many individuals believe that it would be reprehensible for them to go in for religious study and seek the answer to deep inner questionings, lest, by so doing, they should be shirking human obligations. The result is that matters of secondary importance are given first consideration, and vital questions little or none. Yet, if one tithe of the commendable fidelity shown in the execution of material tasks were used to promote spiritual awakening, the old man with his deeds would be rapidly put off, and the subjection to evil under which mankind groans would be replaced by the dominion of good. For material thinking, and the confused sense of Deity to which are traceable the physical sufferings, crimes, and tragedies of human experience, Christian Science offers the demonstrable understanding of God, divine Principle.

So, while the Christian Scientist is conscientious in the performance of all his daily duties, and carries them out more efficiently because he regards this as part of his high aim, his foremost endeavor is to spiritualize his consciousness and to prove the status of his real spiritual manhood. Mankind is surfeited with material knowledge, and because of this its outlook on life is limited and darkened. Christian Science stands ready to release one from the fictitious atmosphere of human suffering due to materialistic education.
