A friend remarked to me in 1914 that a good religion was what I needed most. After thinking this over I decided to ask God to show me the right religion, no matter what it was. Several months later, while in a Pullman car on the way to Mexico, I noticed copies of The Christian Science Journal and the Christian Science Sentinel on one of the seats. While I was looking them over, the owner returned and I asked him what Christian Science was. After assuring himself that I was really interested, he related his experience in Christian Science; and, strange as it all seemed, I believed everything he told me. He showed me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and I persuaded him to sell it to me. I read the book, but was not conscious of any understanding; however, my belief was never shaken.
When I returned to the United States in 1918, I visited Christian Science churches in the different cities where I was staying. I heard testimonies of healing, but I had not experienced a healing, not having been ill. Although I believed in the healing power of Christian Science, I had a secret desire to experience a healing to prove to others in my family that it would heal. Upon returning to Mexico City in March, 1919, I was attacked with influenza. The practitioner who was sent for immediately came and gave me treatment. The following day I arose from my bed free from fever and completely healed. I was overjoyed. The practitioner was very loving and patient, and cautioned me against literature that might adulterate the truth as taught by Mrs. Eddy.
Soon after this my wife accepted Science. Our little girl was born under Christian Science care, without medical aid and without pain to the mother, although it was a complicated case. Since then two other children have been born with only Science as the physician.
