I KNOW WHY

From the March 1932 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"A rose, the smile of God."—Science and Health, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 175.

I know why I have loved the flowers so long
With happy heartbeats; and the thrush's song;
And those tall trees that rim the burning sedge,
With cooling shadows at the daylight's edge.

I know why in the early, early spring
So perfect is the thorn's pale coloring.
These are God's smiles, across His face that pass—
God's smiles that I see darkly through a glass.
