I was brought up to read and study the Bible, and all my life had desired to understand what I read. I had earnestly prayed to a great power that I knew must exist to help me to understand how to be good; but as I grew to womanhood and then to motherhood I found that I needed more than ever to understand; for it seemed that my prayers were not answered. I could not impart faith in the Bible to my children, because I had not proved it to be of any great help or comfort in time of trouble; in fact, as time went on I ceased to read it much, though I studied everything that might give me any light on the cause of things, always praying to be guided aright.
As time went on my husband became ill—so ill that we could find no help for him. Many of the best doctors and some specialists were sought, but he grew worse. About this time some Christian Science literature was handed me and I read it, but as I had lost faith in everything it did not interest me. Two or three doctors advised a change of climate, saying that by so doing there might be some hope; so, as my husband seemed to be much worse, we sold our home and almost all our goods and prepared to go. As we had no income our money was rapidly going. I also was considered a very weakly woman and had been so for years. I had tried many physicians, but to no avail.
At this point I sent for a physician to examine my husband to see if he could stand so long a journey. This physician called another, and after a long consultation both told me I could not move him for at least two weeks. It was then that I picked up "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and began to read in earnest. I shall never forget when the first gleam of light came to me of God as taught in this Science. I had gone into a room that I might be alone. I do not know how long I had read when I caught the light and tears streamed down my face, I was so grateful. Since that time I have never doubted. My husband was brought back to health and activity, and in less than three months was building us a new home. I also found many of my own ills disappearing; and soon some were entirely gone, never to appear again.
