"A REAL Christian Scientist is a marvel, a miracle in the universe of mortal mind. With selfless love, he inscribes on the heart of humanity and transcribes on the page of reality the living, palpable presence—the might and majesty!—of goodness. He lives for all mankind, and honors his creator." Thus, our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, on Miscellaneous Writings, page 294 of "Miscellaneous Writings" sets forth her noble estimate and expectation of those who essay to follow her revelation of Christian Science.
Being a Christian Scientist involves gaining an understanding of the two great fundamentals—the perfection of God and the perfection of man in His likeness—and of so applying these revealed truths that human character is regenerated and the real man habitually exemplified. Mrs. Eddy has given to the world full and satisfying definitions of God and of man; and throughout her writings she has emphasized these truths of real being, showing the spiritual means through which they are revealed to human consciousness, and the manner in which humanity can demonstrate them.
The truths set forth in the Bible were unfolded to human consciousness through specific illuminations during many centuries. God has revealed Himself to men in various ways and in sufficient measure to meet their individual and collective needs. The writers of the Old Testament show Him as the Supreme Being, to whom belong righteousness and loving-kindness; who is infinite, perfect, merciful, just. There is also presented the hope that there should be protection from all evil; that there should be given to men a new covenant of the heart—spiritual communion with God; and that God should pour out His spirit upon all mankind in universal illumination.
