SABBATH OBSERVANCE

From the April 1932 issue of The Christian Science Journal

SABBATH observance, like many other things to-day, is taking on new meaning. It is being learned that something more than mere church attendance and staying away from business is needed for true service. In this falling away from outward forms of service, sometimes the pendulum appears to swing to the other extreme; and it would seem at times as if Sabbath observance has been crowded out by the modern mode of living. It may appear to be a long way from the olden-time solemn observance of the Sabbath day to the customs of to-day; from the earlier somewhat doleful worship to the present happier manner in which men seek to worship God.

Almost everyone has some individual views about the keeping of the Sabbath, and usually a certain deference is evident. Men are learning the difference between material observance of the Sabbath day and spiritual recognition of the real meaning of Sabbath observance. Without a right understanding of its spiritual significance, can there be proper regard for the Sabbath? Is it possible for one really to observe the Sabbath if by this is meant merely a day set aside from irksome duty, or a day in which to seek amusement in material pleasures? Vastly different from this is true Sabbath observance: there must be what someone has called ''a Sabbath of the heart."

Jesus clearly showed the meaning and purpose of the Sabbath, and pointed out the difference between observing it from a sense of duty and observing it as a happy spiritual privilege. He said, "The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath." What joy comes in learning that the Sabbath was made for man to honor the work of almighty God!
