ON SEEING THINGS AS THEY REALLY ARE

From the April 1932 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THE healing ministry of Christian Science is literally doing wonders for men and women all over the world in helping them to begin to see things as they really are. Mary Baker Eddy made the revolutionary discovery that, inasmuch as God is Spirit, His universe must be like Him in quality, that is, spiritual; hence it must be a universe made up of spiritual ideas. A material universe is only a supposititious combination of material beliefs. In other words, the world which we have been taught to believe is material is but objectified material belief.

On page 86 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy says: "Mortal mind sees what it believes as certainly as it believes what it sees. It feels, hears, and sees its own thoughts." This may seem a radical statement, but anyone who will make a sincere effort can prove in a measure its truth for himself.

A seemingly insignificant incident may furnish an illustration. A young man who had believed himself an invalid for several years visited a museum of art where he saw a piece of sculpture entitled "The Hand of God." In the palm of the hand were two figures. To the youth it seemed to speak of man's helplessness in the hand of God. All the powerful fingers needed to do was to close, and man's life would be crushed out! The young man went away depressed, with a deep sense of the futility of life. Some time later he was healed through Christian Science. With this healing came a new sense of God, as incorporeal, infinite divine Love, incapable of producing disease and suffering. He again visited the museum, and in stopping to examine this piece of sculpture found he had not truly perceived the sculptor's intent. He now recognized that the artist had endeavored to depict the tender protection of the hand of God, "that hand which bears creation up."
