Christian Science was first brought to my notice in 1892. At that time I was very much dissatisfied with my understanding of the Scriptures, although reared by devout Christian parents who each morning called us together for prayer and Scripture reading and a hymn before we started our day's work. I am truly grateful for this divine influence, but I felt this teaching was lacking in the proofs which Jesus had referred to.
When I was told that Christian Science taught the Christ-healing, and that I could prove my faith by my works, I immediately bought "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. And as I read and studied this book I felt at peace with God and all mankind: I knew I had found the truth, and all my questions were answered. The Christ, Truth, has been my only physician since that time. Among some of the first healings were those of measles, mumps, and whooping cough for the children. I was permanently healed of sick headaches. During the so-called influenza epidemic, how I thanked God for Christian Science, and for The Christian Science Journal and the Christian Science Sentinel with their very helpful articles! And the ninety-first Psalm meant so much in destroying fear, especially the seventh verse, "A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee." And it did not, although I worked a week in one house where there were five suffering with the disease at one time. They were all healed through Christian Science.
I should like to speak of two instantaneous healings. About four years ago, in going to the basement I stepped on a three-cornered block of wood which had a long spike in it. My full weight was thrown on one ankle and it felt as if every cord had almost snapped. I fell forward on my hands and knees. I had just finished reading a splendid article in the Journal on protection. The first thought came: How could this happen to me? I can never get upstairs without help! Then the thought came, Why, this is just an opportunity to prove the truth of what you were reading! Right then I began to realize the truth as we are taught in Christian Science. I seemed to feel all those cords going back into place. Then I arose, fixed the fire, went upstairs, dressed, and walked eighteen blocks without the least feeling of sprain, and there was no after effect. The healing was complete.
