For all the good that has come to me and my family through Christian Science I should like to express my gratitude.
I learned of Christian Science when our daughter, then an infant six weeks old, became ill with violent whooping cough and was so worn out by the disease that we doubted her recovery. After all human aid, medical efforts, and material remedies had been found wanting, our attention was drawn to Christian Science. We decided to try it as a last resort and asked a Christian Science practitioner for help, which was lovingly given. The use of material remedies was stopped, and the doctor dismissed. As by a miracle there was a sudden change for the better in the child's condition. The coughing spells abated, and the child's strength returned; so that after a while it was quite restored, and she now is a thoroughly healthy child.
This wonderful healing was the cause of my taking up the study of Christian Science to get to the bottom of the nature of its healing power. In the beginning much was vague and unintelligible to me. While I had to admit that it was logical and consistent for Christian Science to declare, for instance, that evil has no reality, because God, good, who is All-in-all, made everything that was made, and, according to the first chapter of Genesis, "it was very good," still I could not comprehend how it was that evil, sickness, suffering, pain could seem to us so real, so palpable. But after deeper study of Christian Science it became clear to me, and I grasped the meaning of the words of our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 265),"Man understands spiritual existence in proportion as his treasures of Truth and Love are enlarged."
