When Christian Science found me I was at what seemed the end of this mortal existence, a wreck physically and mentally. One morning when I awoke and turned in bed everything went black and I seemed to slide into a dark hole. How long I lay in that condition I never knew, but when I moved the same thing happened again. I lay so for days, afraid to move even my hand. Everything was done for me that could be done, but it seemed as if I should pass on. I am most grateful to the doctor who took care of me. He did everything in his power to help me, and at last said if he could build me up enough so that I could go to the beach it was about all that would save me. It was some time before I was able to go, and when I did go the doctor gave me medicine to last me a month; but the end of the month found me back in the valley.
A lady next door came in often to see me and asked me to try Christian Science. She left a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, but I told her I had no interest in it. I told her I thought it might be all right, but it could never help anyone in my condition. But "man's extremity" proved to be "God's opportunity," and after an all-night struggle I told her if she would tell no one I would try it, but if it was all I had to depend on I knew I was gone. A practitioner was called and the work taken up. The healing was instantaneous, and in an hour I walked out and I felt as if I were in a new world.
I was healed, and very happy over this freedom, but took only a halfhearted interest in Christian Science. I read and went over the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly every day, but did not study. My family held to the fear that the trouble would return. I was faithful to Christian Science to the extent that when I needed help I would ask for it, and my healings were always instantaneous. The healing of a broken bone in one treatment was a wonderful proof of the presence and power of God. Still, I did not study, but was just seeking the loaves and the fishes.
