Christian Science was brought to our attention twenty-nine years ago. My father and my mother became interested in it through a sermon delivered by their orthodox pastor with the intention of denouncing Christian Science; but instead of accomplishing its purpose, it led them to investigate this religion.
Since that time Christian Science has met all our needs; and for the divine protection and guidance I have enjoyed since childhood, I feel a great sense of gratitude. When our family were still quite young students of Christian Science, I experienced the healing of a severe cut. The top of my finger was nearly severed in an accident. It was replaced, my mother working for me as Christian Science teaches, and the result was a perfect healing of the finger and the nail.
While I was breaking off a branch of decorative berries one day, a thorn pierced my forefinger. These thorns were considered very poisonous. The finger immediately became blue and swollen and the joint stiff. At first there was a great sense of fear occasioned by the unnatural appearance of the finger, and by the fact that there was no one in the house I could call to remove the thorn. I tried to realize that, as Mrs. Eddy says, "there is but one primal cause. Therefore there can be no effect from any other cause, and there can be no reality in aught which does not proceed from this great and only cause" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 207). The fear was almost instantly met, and I was able to remove two pieces of thorn from the finger. I then read Science and Health for some time, taking care not to look at the finger, so that I should not make a reality of its appearance. This occurred in the afternoon. The following morning, when my mother removed another large piece of thorn, the swelling had entirely disappeared, as well as the discoloration. Christian Science work was continued, and within a few days the healing was perfect. This experience was invaluable in that it gave me absolute proof that God is ever available when we turn entirely to Truth for guidance.
