SPIRITUAL ENLIGHTENMENT

From the February 1934 issue of The Christian Science Journal

EVERY reasoning human being will admit that the need of the world today is and always has been true enlightenment. The desire to learn springs from this need and will continue until education is purged of materiality. While material education rests on unreal premises, spiritual enlightenment leads human consciousness to the understanding of infinite and orderly creation.

Light has always symbolized the good and true. It has meant raising our thought to the source and cause of all that really exists; and so we find the Scriptures metaphorically declaring that "God is light, and in him is no darkness at all." Jesus realized the truth about God and His Christ, and he said to his disciples, "As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world." His life or example, which made him "the light of the world," made him the Way-shower for us all. Even as mists and fog disappear under the warming influence of sunlight, so the truth of God's love for man, reflected in the life and words of Jesus, brings the understanding which melts the mists of the Adam-dream from human consciousness and reveals man as the reflection of his creator, the beloved son of the Father, pure and perfect. Yes, we really are the sons and daughters of God now; our real self reflects Him now. The so-called material senses constitute the dream which, if accepted as a part or the whole of being, hides man's real existence as the reflection of the infinite Father-Mother—the son of God.

What will awaken mankind from the mortal dream or material illusion? The answer has come to us in this age through the unselfish efforts of Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered the remedy in the spiritual meaning of the Bible and gave it to the world in her writings, so that all who desire may gain spiritual enlightenment. Following the Master's example, she took no credit to herself, but reflected the light as it came to her. On page 510 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" she says, "Truth and Love enlighten the understanding, in whose 'light shall we see light;' and this illumination is reflected spiritually by all who walk in the light and turn away from a false material sense."
