GOD'S LAW

From the March 1935 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The question is often asked by those unacquainted with the teachings of Christian Science, How is one to find and prove the healing power of which Christian Science gives knowledge, and which its adherents utilize in working out problems of sickness and sin? Mary Baker Eddy, Discoverer and Founder of this Science, gives the clue to success in all healings, of whatever nature, where she says in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 145), "If there is any mystery in Christian healing, it is the mystery which godliness always presents to the ungodly, —the mystery always arising from ignorance of the laws of eternal and unerring Mind."

Here she introduces the word "law," which may be used as a guide in learning how the healings are accomplished. And what is God's law? A dictionary definition is, "Collectively, the whole body of God's commandments or revelations; the will of God." In its divine sense, law refers to the invariable and infallible expression, or orderly activity, of divine Principle. Then the whole procedure of healing through Christian Science resolves itself into the matter of overcoming ignorance of God's law, of gaining a knowledge of law, whereby it may be used in human experience. An earnest study of the Bible in the light of Christian Science is the way to gain this demonstrable knowledge.

"This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them." From the study of music and mathematics we know that where there is a law there are rules for applying that law. Christian Science explains divine law and furnishes definite and inspired rules for making it practical. As these rules are carefully and prayerfully applied, a confused and disorganized mental condition is reconstructed; and this is a blessing of inestimable value. With this improved state of consciousness comes health in place of sickness. Sorrow and despair give way to joy and peace. What is termed an "inferiority complex" is replaced with courage and confidence, and this results in a better quality of whatever work one may be doing. Furthermore, this improved and God-governed consciousness gives the student a broader concept of man's capabilities as a child of God.
