I came to Christian Science not...

From the March 1935 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I came to Christian Science not as one who is sick but as one seeking the truth. Chronic inflammation of the middle ear, from which I had suffered since the age of five as a result of measles, I did not consider as a sickness that could be healed, having become so accustomed to it. I had been having medical treatment for this difficulty for forty years, but was driven to the conclusion that if healing by this means were possible, one of the many physicians and specialists consulted would have brought it about. It was only when, for a time, total deafness came on and threatened to prevent my taking class instruction, that I asked for help in Christian Science. But my doubt whether this trouble could ever be healed was so great that the practitioner's work had little support and apparently negligible success. In the meantime the years came when farsightedness set in, and in ignorance of man's true being I yielded to this condition too, and put on glasses which I was obliged to wear for eleven years.

Six years ago I was called upon to organize the work in a small field, where my duties included those of First Reader. During the second year of this service I was able to lay aside the glasses, and since that time I have been enjoying the best of sight. Before the close of the third year I was obliged to discontinue further work and withdraw from it entirely. Six months later, however, another request came to me to take up the work again. I obeyed that second call, too, and then a wonderful thing occurred. When again occupying the Reader's desk, I observed from week to week that I could hear better. By the end of six months the difficulty in hearing had been removed and the bothersome outward symptoms of the trouble had disappeared. I was healed, and I welcomed this healing as a gift from divine Love for faithful obedience in Love's service.

My gratitude would not be complete if it did not extend to our beloved Leader, who brought to us the revealed Christ, Truth, showing us that it is God "who healeth all thy diseases." Her loving provision for the welfare of all mankind is expressed in the systematic organization of the Christian Science movement, and it blesses equally those doing the work and those seeking help. I must express gratitude also to the teacher whose well-substantiated precepts have been so helpful to my growth. Also to the practitioners who have helped me on different occasions, particularly in the difficult times during and after the war, may my warmest gratitude be here expressed.—
