Testimonies of Healing

I am very grateful to my mother...

From the May 1935 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I am very grateful to my mother for my early training in a Christian home; but there were many things in life that seemed so inconsistent. How could God be Love and still permit accidents, sorrow, war? Then I heard of Christian Science, and its logical and practical explanations answered all my questions, and I knew I had found the truth. Although it was not for physical healing that I took up the study of this Science, many ailments have gradually disappeared as I have gained some understanding of the truth of being.

Years before I knew of Christian Science, I broke a bone in my hand, and it set incorrectly. When it was X-rayed the doctors said I was fortunate not to have had lockjaw, and that to rebreak the bone in order to set it properly would be too dangerous. My hand was in a splint and I had weeks of painful massage before I could move the affected finger. Over two years ago I broke the bone again while climbing rocks at a picnic. It was rather painful at first and the whole hand was swollen for some days, but throughout the experience there was no fear. I felt calm and full of rejoicing that I knew the truth that frees, and so did not have to submit to the theories of materia medica. I was able to drive the car home so that those with me did not know what had occurred. I made a sling to prevent myself lying on the hand in the night, but otherwise my only aid was the textbook. I slept well and by day could carry on with all I had to do. In less than a week the bone had healed and I could move the finger freely. This was a wonderful proof to me, as it was such a contrast to the previous experience.

I also had a healing in two days of a severe attack of influenza, being able on the third day to drive my car two hundred miles to London and to fulfill a week of strenuous engagements. An instantaneous healing came after a kettle of boiling water was spilled over my legs and feet. I fainted, but when I came to I saw so clearly that it is mortal mind that says, I am hurt; and mortal mind being false, matter utters no complaint. I spoke aloud "the scientific statement of being," as given by Mrs. Eddy on page 468 of Science and Health and went to bed not even feeling tempted to look for any injury. The next morning there was only a slight red mark, which soon went, and there was no pain whatever.
