It is with gratitude that I send the following testimony.
We were a family of sufferers. My earliest recollections of my mother are of seeing her ill and in acute pain. After many years of suffering and when hydropathy, allopathy, homeopathy, electric treatments, and dieting had been exhausted and the physicians were unable to do anything to relieve her suffering except to administer morphine, Christian Science was brought to our attention. She was then living on celery broth, and we were told she was suffering from cancer of the stomach.
In the fall of 1898, some friends who were calling at our home, upon learning that my mother was not prejudiced, said they would send someone who knew something about Christian Science to talk to her. A lady who had previously been my Sunday school teacher for years in an orthodox Sunday school came and talked to my mother and me, explaining to us that God heals all manner of sickness. She had been quite marvelously healed just by reading Science and Health, and the truths she voiced to us held a wealth of promise. We had always been readers of the Bible, but from that night on it became a different book, one really intended for us. We devoured all we heard. We obtained a copy of Science and Health to use until we could secure our own. There was no Reading Room or church in our town then, and it was necessary for us to send to Boston for our copy.
