It is time that I acknowledged to "the great congregation" the continuous help Christian Science has been to me for about twenty-seven years. My introduction to Science and Health came when I was asked to read it aloud to a friend. I thought little of it then, but later, finding that I could heal by some of the truths I remembered in it, I determined to get the book and learn more about it, as I had always wished to heal as Jesus did. I did so, and committed certain parts of it to memory. This proved to be preparation for a time when my parents were failing and I could not find time to read; but in the silent hours of the night I was able to digest the parts I had learned. For four months I did not once go to bed, while before and after that there were broken and trying nights. A doctor attending them at that time said to me, "If I had been told that the strongest woman or the best trained nurse in the world had done what I can see you must have done I should have said it was impossible." He added, "I do not understand it, for you do not look strong."
I could tell of many healings, but one in particular I should like to relate. For three days I had been suffering with a burning pain around my face and forehead, when at dawn one morning I rebelled. I had done all I knew how to do and the pain remained undiminished! Then a sentence from Science and Health (p. 421) came to me, "There is nodisease." I realized that if I believed this I should act accordingly. Suddenly I found that there was no more pain—that in its place was a heavenly peace.
This was the second time I had known this indescribable bliss. Some years before it had come to me as a result of my expressed gratitude for God's nearness. The memory of it is as a light ahead of me encouraging me to attain it permanently.
