PERSISTENCY

From the January 1936 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Persistency is that quality of thought which enables one to stand steadfastly for a purpose and continue along a chosen line of action even in the face of opposition. This quality is much needed by the student of Christian Science who would make steady progress in gaining a demonstrable understanding of this profound subject and use his understanding in his daily experience.

In that masterpiece of religious literature, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes on page 462: "Whoever would demonstrate the healing of Christian Science must abide strictly by its rules, heed every statement, and advance from the rudiments laid down. There is nothing difficult nor toilsome in this task, when the way is pointed out; but self-denial, sincerity, Christianity, and persistencealone win the prize, as they usually do in every department of life."

Aggressive mental suggestion may try to persuade the student that he has not the necessary understanding to overcome the errors which confront him. In such a case he needs to declare the simple truths he has already learned and continue to study our textbooks, the Bible and Science and Health; and as he does this, more of the truth will unfold in his consciousness. Perhaps one has but just started in his study of Christian Science and feels that his understanding is inadequate to meet his problems. Such a one is privileged to seek the additional help of a more experienced student, knowing that he will be divinely guided and will learn how to escape the pitfalls of mortal mind.
