Since 1902 my employment in railway service has been almost continuous. From 1920 to 1927, however, I was being treated for colitis and endocarditis by some of the foremost specialists in this city, who no doubt exercised all the skill they had, and there was some improvement, for which I am thankful. Although the orders as to diet and medicine, which were strict, were faithfully obeyed, I was compelled to be off duty for a period of eight months at one time and six months at another. There is cause for gratitude that during all those months my employers made no attempt to fill my position except by temporary appointment.
In December, 1927, after three months' treatment, it seemed that further reliance on material remedies was useless; and although there was some prejudice against what it was then understood to be, I decided to ask for help in Christian Science, which was lovingly given. The secretary of a beneficiary society, who called each week, was asked to accept the disability certificate signed by a Christian Science practitioner instead of a physician. He agreed to do so, saying frankly he did not think Science would be of much help. At the same time, however, he described the healing of another member through Christian Science many years ago, which he himself witnessed, of a disease pronounced incurable, after the attending physician had said the man could not survive another twenty-four hours.
In my case improvement seemed slow, but in about three months I was able to report for duty, and since then have not been absent a single day because of any physical disability, nor have I taken a dose of medicine of any kind, and restrictions as to diet have been discarded.
