When I was in great physical need a friend asked if he might send me some Christian Science literature. I consented, and after reading a copy of the Sentinel I got in touch with a practitioner. She recommended that I borrow a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy from the library, and said that if I decided I wanted Christian Science, she would be glad to work for me.
After three days' reading of the book I awakened to find that my feet, which had been greatly swollen for some time, were in a normal condition. I fully realized then that there was a spiritual healing power, so I discarded all medicine. When I read the definition of God on page 465 of the textbook, the word "Principle" arrested my attention; to me it meant an applicable working basis from which to work out my salvation. So with the Bible and Science and Health I set to work to gain an understanding of this Principle and to apply it as understood. The answer was the healing of valvular heart trouble and of stomach trouble of long standing, an instantaneous healing of smallpox, and the healing of an injured wrist. The wrist became greatly swollen and very painful. I called a practitioner for help and in a short time the pain was lessened, but the arm became swollen to the elbow and discolored. I placed radical reliance on God and Christian Science and never wavered. I knew that He heals all our diseases and needs no help from man, so there was not even a bandage. At the end of ten days, in turning the hand, I heard a loud pop. I knew then that the work was done. While the swelling and soreness did not abate immediately, I was enabled to do what was right for me to do without hindrance from the body. I did not have the arm X-rayed. Someone examining it said it had been broken in two places, but had healed completely. The wrist is normal in appearance and as strong as before.
I have had many healings of diseases which I am unable to classify. Jesus never classified disease; therefore we do not need to know its name. I find that by looking away from matter to Mind, Principle, in proportion to our understanding do we find the solution to our problems. I can truly say that had it not been for Christian Science I should not be in the world today.
