My first healing in Christian Science is most precious to me, because I was healed of ignorance of God's love. I was baptized and brought up according to the teachings of an orthodox church, became a member of that church at the age of twelve, and was an active worker in it as a young girl. My parents gave me a wonderful, spiritual, home training. I married a spiritually-minded young man, and with the blessings and prayers of our churches and dear ones we left our homes and went to live in Guaymas, Mexico.
At the end of a year a little one was to come to us, so we returned to the home of my parents for this event. Our hearts were overflowing with joy and expectation. But our baby was given to us one moment and taken from us by death in the next. My heart was broken, and all I could think was, "Oh, God, why did You do it?" Our ministers, dear ones, and friends came to my bedside, all saying the same thing, "My dear, it is God's will, and He knows best." But my constant question was, "Why?" I was even lovingly told I must not ask why.
This state of thinking brought fever and pain to my body, and the doctor and my family became very anxious about me. At the end of two weeks my precious mother said to me: "I cannot bear to hear God blamed for all this any longer; I do not believe He had anything to do with it. A mistake has been made, and you, not God, have made it. Get well, and pray always in your heart that God will show you the mistake and how to correct it." I can still hear those words, and because they corrected my thought about God I was able to get right up. be dressed, and taken downstairs. Within three weeks we returned to our home.
