THE CALL FOR CONSECRATION

From the October 1938 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"NEVER was there a more solemn and imperious call than God makes to us all, right here, for fervent devotion and an absolute consecration to the greatest and holiest of all causes." With these stirring words, on page 177 of "Miscellaneous Writings," our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, calls all students of Christian Science to sentinel their mental watchtowers of scientific purpose and action. Within these watchtowers of consciousness consecrated warriors of Truth admit as real and worthy of entrance only those pure, spiritual ideas which have their source in God, divine Mind. Herein is protection from the possibility of danger, fear of sickness or lack, dependence on so-called material chance or luck. For this citadel rests secure on the unshakable foundation of spiritual understanding of God, and of man as His image and likeness, wherein naught is real but harmony.

The emphatic call for consecration to the demands of God for spiritual living and loving, quoted above, is but one of many which Mrs. Eddy, throughout her writings, makes to students for all time. Each individual behest reiterates the great fact that a practical and progressive understanding of Christian Science requires, and is indeed dependent upon, "absolute consecration of thought, energy, and desire," as she states on page 3 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."

Are we willing to obey this call from omnipotent and omniactive Mind, the tender Father-Mother of all? Are we willing to cast off as unreal and worthless every critical, impure, and unlovely thought or desire that would confuse and becloud our clear reflection of this altogether lovely Mind? Unalloyed sincerity and obedience, maintained through consistent study and practical application, are requisite to reach the desired goal. No slackness or halfheartedness is allowed to hamper the joy-filled, health-filled way of one who devotes himself to the cause of establishing the kingdom of heaven in the hearts of men, thus making lasting peace and harmony apparent here and now.
