THE UNREALITY OF EVIL

From the October 1938 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THE daily life of many would appear to be a constant struggle to ward off the attacks of evil. From the cradle to the grave mortals, un-instructed in the Science of being, appear to be involved in a continual fight to protect themselves from the ills of poor health, sin, poverty, disappointment, unhappiness, and the like, only finally to succumb to the supposedly unavoidable enemy, death. Falsely educated as to the nature of God and man, accepting as true the evidence of the material senses, mortals, in general, believe these ills to be real, and through this belief give to these evils their apparent power.

To lighten this dark outlook comes the ringing assertion of Christian Science that evil, in whatever shape or form, is not true and has no power. This assertion is based on the inspired teachings of the Bible.

Christian Science rests on the statements of the Bible that God is good, is Spirit, is Love, and is infinite. From the premise that Love is everywhere follows logically the conclusion that evil, the opposite of Love, is nowhere. In God's creation, filled with love, there is no room for evil of any sort. Habakkuk, in his prayer to God, declared, "Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil," and indeed God can no more be conscious of evil than the sun can include darkness. To God, evil does not exist; therefore, to man in His likeness evil does not exist.
