A number of years ago there appeared in the Christian Science Sentinel an account of my healing of the drink habit.
I was at that time in bondage to the cigarette habit. As time went on I began to realize my bondage to it and made an effort to gain my freedom, but not wholeheartedly; therefore no healing was effected.
In due season Christian Science treatment was asked for, and lovingly given by several practitioners, but without results. Accordingly they were dismissed, for then I realized that it was my work. "Physician, heal thyself." So I earnestly began work for myself. Since I was in financial difficulties, it seemed to me dishonest to use other people's money, so to speak (for I owed money), to buy cigarettes, one thing I could well get along without. This reasoning caused me to make the decision to buy no more cigarettes, at least until my debts were all paid. This caused mortal mind to protest vigorously, for it was a year or more before the hankering finally gave way to Truth. During this time I begged and occasionally purchased some cigarettes.
