Surely never more vitally nor more imperatively has the subject of security and defense engaged the thoughts of world citizenry than today. It is apparent that adequate armament, military measures, and preparedness are essential in human governments until men and nations have learned to subjugate their lust for gain, greed, and mad ambition, and to respect the rights, lives, and liberty of innocent peoples. Nevertheless, Christian Science makes it plain that permanent peace and protection can be established only through the recognition of the omnipotence and allness of God, good, and the consequent impotence and nothingness of evil. This spiritual understanding is an infallible fortress, ever and instantly available to men, and is entered by divinely mental, not by material means.
In the ninety-first Psalm, beloved of Bible students, is given a vivid and inspiring picture of the all-embracing care, the tenderness and love, of God. In the fourth verse of this Psalm we read, "He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler."
Certainly this declaration of the Psalmist indicates that our trust is to be placed unreservedly in spiritual modes and methods, and is not to be divided between matter and Spirit. The teachings of Christian Science rest upon Scriptural authority for proof and demonstration. These teachings show conclusively that if we are constantly to abide in the impenetrable shelter of God's love and care, we must spiritualize our thinking through consecrated obedience to the divine precepts. This state of spiritual well-being may be gained by any sincere individual who is willing to turn away from materiality, with all its deceptive, delusive, and disappointing promises, to radical reliance on the deific power, presence, and purpose.
