About fourteen years ago I began the study of Christian Science, desirous of knowing more about a religion whose truths had healed me almost overnight of a very distressing and painful condition of the throat, diagnosed and treated the day before as quinsy. The result of medical treatment had brought only an aggravation of the condition, and a great sense of disappointment and disillusionment caused me to turn in my extremity with open heart to a practitioner of Christian Science for help.
I was unable to speak a word to this practitioner during his visit, but I glimpsed, as a result of his consecrated thought, something of the Love that tenderly guards and sustains its child—the Love wherein is no disease or pain, and in the "atmosphere" or consciousness of which I "live, and move, and breathe."
I retired that evening with a sense of complete trust in God's care; and on waking the following morning, having slept continuously through the night, I found my throat relaxed. The so-called law of matter that claimed this abscess had to break to discharge its poison, was found to be nonexistent, and the whole experience was summed up in these words of Isaiah: "Who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, . . . and hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor?"
