FAITH AS A FACTOR IN HEALING

From the March 1941 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science is not a faith-cure. Its healings result from the operation of divine Principle, or Truth, acting beneficially upon human belief. However, faith is an important factor in spiritual healing, for it contributes a necessary condition of consent or receptivity whereby the so-called human consciousness yields to the divine. The author of Hebrews wrote, "Without faith it is impossible to please him [God]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him."

Faith, as consistently used by Christ Jesus, implies far more than blind belief in powers unknown. It searches the very depths of character and demands receptivity and readiness to advance into the realm of spiritual consciousness.

Faith is subject to development. Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, says of its healing power (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 368), "When we come to have more faith in the truth of being than we have in error, more faith in Spirit than in matter, more faith in living than in dying, more faith in God than in man, then no material suppositions can prevent us from healing the sick and destroying error."
